Alfred Nobel filly Prim And Proper gained a brilliant win in the $100,000 Listed 1000m Supremacy Stakes at Ascot on Saturday (March 9).
Prim and Proper was ridden by Jason Whiting for trainer, part-owner and breeder Lou Luciani.
She sat one-one and finished with the race best 34.70sec. final 600m to score by a half-head from the favourite, Rio Del Mar (by Magnus), with 1 1/2len. to third-placed Beethoven (by Helmet), despite laying-in up the straight.
The win showed that although having raced five times for two wins Prim And Proper should continue to improve with further race experience.
She’s currently on TABtouch’s fifth line of betting for the $500,000 Group 2 1200m Karrakatta Plate at Ascot on April 6.
“We thought she would go very close,” said Whiting. “She was very good first-up when a short half-head second to Niccovi, just knocking-up over the last little bit.
“She covered them quite easy today but put the cue back in the rack a bit late. Somewhere down the line blinkers might do her the world of good.
“At the moment she’s stopping and waiting for them.”
Said Luciani: She’s a tough little bugger doing us proud. She’s as game as Ned Kelly.”
The emergence of Prim and Proper into one of WA’s best juveniles should come as no surprise. Alfred Nobel was Ireland’s champion 2Y0 in 2009 when he won both the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes and Group 2 Railway Stakes.
