The two-year-old colt, an 11/4 chance having his second race start, sat handy under six-time champion Irish jockey Pat Smullen, the No. 1 rider for trainer Dermott Weld, and finished hard to beat Mint Chai (6/1) by 3/4-length. The 5/4 favourite, Greyscape, was 1/2-length away third.
Alfred Nobel, winner of the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes and Group 2 Railway Stakes in Ireland for champion trainer Aidan O’Brien, now has 13 individual winners from his first northern hemisphere crop.
He has had five runners from his first WA crop: Showy Chloe (winner Group 3 WA Sires Produce Stakes and third in the Group 2 Karrakatta Plate, Group 3 Gimcrack Stakes and Listed Supremacy Stakes from four runs), Dickey (second Westspeed Plate and third Listed Magic Millions Perth 2Y0 Classic), Danerip’s Girl (second Westspeed Plate-twice), Regal Gleam (debut second Westspeed Plate) and The Blue Nipper (debut second Bell-Vista Fruit & Veg Plate).
Lynward Park, Bullsbrook, has purchased Alfred Nobel outright from Coolmore Stud and he will now be based permanently in WA in a major boost for the local breeding industry.
