Veronica Guerin was an Irish crime reporter murdered near Dublin in 1996 by drug lords.
Let’s hope a grey filly by the same name has a much brighter future.
Guerin, by Lynward Park’s Balmont from Dare To Be Rich, by Zedrich, and bred by Mrs Zoe Ellis, showed plenty of potential winning a 950m trial at Lark Hill on Monday by a half-length in 57.09sec., the fastest heat for two-year-olds.
She’s certainly bred for success.
Balmont was a brilliant juvenile, winning the historic Group 1 Middle Park Stakes and Group 2 Gimcrack Stakes in England, then trained on to match it with the best sprinters in Europe being placed in the Group 1 July Cup and Group 1 Golden Jubilee Stakes.
Dare To Be Rich is from Dare To Compare, a three-quarter sister to Another Omen, the dam of Send A Sign and Our Believingly.
Another Omen won the Group 2 WA Champion Fillies Stakes and Group 3 Belmont Sprint.
Send A Sign was an unbeaten juvenile in Perth taking the Group 2 WA Sires Produce Stakes, Listed Sheraton Perth Stakes and Pinjarra Sires Produce Stakes. Sent to veteran trainer George Hanlon in Melbourne, he went on to win 10 Saturday races, set a 1000m record at Sandown and stand at stud in Queensland.
Our Believingly won the Listed Crystal Slipper Stakes.
This Guerin may create her own headlines.
