Trade Fair (GB)

Bay 2000 (16.1hh) Zafonic (USA) – Danefair (GB), by Danehill (USA) recently deceased.

Rated 2nd top miler in the UK and joint 3rd on the 2003 International Classifications, Trade Fair was a high-class and genuine galloper.  Group 1 placed at two and multiple group 3 winner at 3 and 4, Trade Fair was desperately unlucky to encounter unsuitably wet tracks when racing at the peak of his powers.  His sire Zafonic, was head of the European 2 & 3YO classifications and a horse of extraordinary speed and power effective from 1200m to 2000m.  His dam is the unbeaten and Group 3 winner Danefair who raced 4 times and won from 2000m to 2400m.

Trade Fair is by the nobly bred Zafonic. Bred in Kentucky by Khalid Abdullah’s Juddmonte, Zafonic was produced by multiple group stakes winner Zaizafon, by The Minstrel, and was a full brother to French Group 3 winner Zamindar and a half brother stakes winner Choice Spirit. He won five of seven career starts in two seasons, including the 1993 Two Thousand Guineas (Eng-G1), 1992 Dewhurst Stakes (Eng-G1), Prix Morny (Fr-G1), and Prix de la Salamandre (Fr-G1). Trained by Andre Fabre, he was highweighted as a two-year-old on the European Free Handicap and again as a three-year-old from seven to nine furlongs

At just 12 years of age, Zafaonic died tragically in a paddock accident while enjoying his first visit to the southern hemisphere at Arrowfield Stud.  He did not waste any of his valuable time however and left numerous high quality stock, racking up an enviable stud record of 68.3% winners to winners and 10.2% stakes winners to runners from his eight seasons at stud.  His quality looks likely to endure via his highly successful son Iffraaj.

Not to be outdone, the dam of Trade Fair, Danefair, oozes class.  Unbeaten in four starts and winning two listed events and a Group 3 at distances from 2000m to 2400m, Danefair is by Danehill from a daughter of the champion filly Cairn Rouge.

Trade Fair’s pedigree gave him the speed and stamina required to achieve the status as 3rd top miler in 2003 on the International Classification.  Trade Fair won his maiden as a 2YO at his second start.  His next start was in the Dewhurst Stakes (Eng-G1) finishing a highly credible 3rd.  As expected, he raced on admirably at 3 and 4, running 15 times, 13 of them black type races.  Victories in the Betfair Criterion Stakes (Eng-G3), Emirates Airline Minstrel Stakes (Ire-G3), Cheveley Park Stud King Charles II Stakes (Eng-L) and the Dubai Duty Free Cup (Eng-L) round off his 5 career wins.

With Group winners in England, Dubai, Hong Kong, Qatar and Sweden, Trade Fair has gained a well-deserved reputation as an international siring success.  He has 219 individual winners and is exerting a strong influence on Perth racing that is only set to grow. English breeding expert John Berry hit the nail on the head when he wrote: ‘Trade Fair has the unique ability to upgrade his mares.’
